IowaCASA responds to Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court

Judge Brett Kavanaugh

Judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States today with a vote of 50-48, despite multiple allegations of sexual assault against him. The following is a statement from IowaCASA in response.

From Beth Barnhill, Executive Director of IowaCASA:

This is an outrage. It’s clear that Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, along with their colleagues who voted for Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation, are hiding behind a bogus FBI investigation—one which does not even bother to include an interview with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

Our deepest thanks and gratitude to all the survivors who have come forward in protest, both locally and in Washington, D.C. Despite this disgraceful confirmation, your voices still count. Survivors are powerful and righteous individuals. The country saw this power in the past few weeks. They spoke truth and supported each other. Judge Kavanaugh, we will not go away. We will not be silenced, and we will not be stopped. We are enraged at this injustice, but we know our rage is justified.

We applaud Dr. Blasey Ford for her courage and for her harrowing testimony last week. We commend those who spoke out after her, including Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick. Their stories are all too familiar to those of us who work with survivors each and every day.

There is no precedent for the kind of obnoxious behavior we have seen from some of our national leaders, including the President of the United States, concerning Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Some of our elected officials have chosen not to believe survivors who have bravely come forward with their stories of sexual assault. Instead, they have put a man accused of sexual assault by multiple women on the highest court of the land. Voting in favor of Judge Kavanaugh to sit on the Supreme Court is an absolute disgrace. Survivors deserve better—they deserve to be believed.
