IowaCASA Connection: Launching Parents for Prevention
IowaCASA Connection | Volume 3, Issue 1 | June 2017
This month during the National Sexual Assault Conference (NSAC) in Dallas, Texas, IowaCASA presented on a new campaign designed to provide parents with the resources they need to prevent sexual violence in their communities. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers participated in focus groups and provided us with information about how best to approach sexual violence prevention. With that information, we created a new resource website at www.parentsforprevention.org that we encourage you to check out!
The website is categorized by the age of the child you're looking for resources to help. Once you click on an age range, you'll be taken to a list of topics related to parenting and sexual violence prevention, specific to age and developmental level you've selected. There's info on consent, healthy sexuality, gender roles, and more!
The website follows IowaCASA's main philosophy that sexual violence can be prevented. Find out more at www.parentsforprevention.org, and be sure to share this resource with family and friends!

IowaCASA staff, along with advocates from our member programs across the state, attended NSAC this month.
We learned a lot to bring back to our agencies! In addition, we had the opportunity to present on multiple topics, including:
generational wisdom within the Latino community (with Katryn Duarte from the Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline);
the Sexual Assault Demonstration Initiative findings and lessons in organizational change;
strategies for Rural Victim Advocates to work with incarcerated survivors;
Iowa's approach to improving sexual assault and culturally specific services;
supporting and sustaining staff at our agencies;
raising a sexually healthy generation through parents for sexual violence prevention;
stable and empowering leadership skills;
and actively anti-racist sexual assault services.
Mira Yusef, the Executive Director of Monsoon United Asian Women of Iowa, also discussed working with Asian and Pacific Islanders on campuses.
Thank you to everyone who attended NSAC this year. We enjoyed seeing familiar faces and participating in informative workshops from fellow colleagues within the anti-violence movement.
