Culturally specific programs help victims from all walks of life heal from sexual assault

Sexual assault is a crime that victims may be scared to talk about, let alone report.

Iowa is leading the nation in its efforts to reach out to victims from all walks of life, especially those who may already face fears of discrimination.

Kimmie Andresen-Reed is an advocate with Transformative Healing in Iowa City. She said the number of trans people who are the target of abuse is often under reported.

"Services, historically, haven't been geared toward LGBTQIA identities at all," Andresen-Reed said.

At Transformative Healing, they work to end violence within sexually diverse groups.
