What Iowa's 4,265 untested rape kits mean for victims

Iowa has 4,265 untested rape evidence kits held in storage by the state's law enforcement agencies, including 36 that date back to the 1990s, a survey released Tuesday by the Attorney General's Crime Victim Assistance Division shows.

The number is higher than officials estimated last summer, when they said there were at least 3,400 untested kits in Iowa.

Testing on the kits will begin in June after a private laboratory is selected to do the work. Kits will be tested in batches of 50; the first group of results is expected in mid-September, officials said.

However, it's not known how many of the 4,265 kits will be tested.
