Sexual assault survivors 'empowered' after Cosby sentencing

September 25, 2018

The man once known as "America's Dad" is headed to prison for sexual assault.

Bill Cosby was sentenced Tuesday to three to 10 years behind bars.

He was convicted earlier this year for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman 14 years ago at his Pennsylvania home.

The 81-year-old must register as a sex offender and undergo counseling for the rest of his life.

Advocates at the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault called Cosby’s sentencing "monumental” and said it sends a clear message to men in power who commit sexual assault.

“Those who do harm are hopefully beginning to understand that there is some accountability there,” said Matty Smith, with the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

Smith said having a judge hold Cosby accountable shows sexual assault survivors that they don't have to be afraid and will be taken seriously.
