Virtual Advocacy Day: Tips for talking with legislators

We get that contacting your legislators can be nerve-racking. Which is why we've compiled a list of helpful tips we hope is useful to you.

  • Keep it simple. Stick to your talking points and keep your message focused and concise.

  • Try various methods of communication when reaching out to your legislator. Most legislators have staff who help them keep track of letters, email, social media, and so forth - but almost all of them will personally read your message(s).

  • Don't be afraid to make it personal. Including personal stories and local anecdotes about why this issue is important to you is a great way to connect with legislators. So feel free to share whatever you're comfortable with, as it relates to the issue you're discussing with them.

  • If a legislator asks you a question you don't know the answer to, don't be afraid to say "I don't know." Get in touch with IowaCASA to find out the answer, and tell your legislator that you'll get back in touch with them. You can contact us at 515-244-7424.

  • Consider asking the legislator to meet in person to discuss the issue more. This is a great way to engage your elected officials. If you need support or resources before meeting with your legislator, don't be afraid to get in touch with IowaCASA at 515-244-7424.
